The Presence Project
Buddhist Psychotherapy & Workshops
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typical session like?
Like all psychotherapy, the specific content of each session depends
on the work that is being done.  Generally,  sessions may include
traditional talk therapy, body awareness exercises, creative art
therapies, mindfulness practices, guided meditations and relaxation
exercises, communication exercises, and homework.

What is Buddhism, what is Buddhist Psychology, and do I have to be a Buddhist or have a
meditation practice to participate in Psychotherapy ?
Buddhism can be described as a science of mind and is often complementary to other religious and
spiritual traditions or no tradition at all.  Buddha means "one who is awake" describing the state of
being fully present to life, which is the goal of Buddhism and the result of mindfulness and loving
kindness practices.  At the core of Buddhist psychology is the understanding that we are Basically
Good, or fundamentally healthy.  With this understanding we work directly with our minds to relax
with who we are and be fully present in our lives.  You do not need to be Buddhist, have any specific
religious or spiritual orientation, or meditation practice.

How do I know this is right for me and what if I find it is not right for me?
The first therapy session is free if you do not wish to continue, being an opportunity to see if we can
work together and if this is something you would like to undertake.  If we both decide to continue
with the therapy, we will schedule future sessions and complete intake forms and assessments.  At
any time, you are free to end therapy.

How long does therapy take?
It depends on the needs and goals you bring. If the goal is a return to previous functioning,
short-term therapy may be sufficient. If the goal is working with more severe issues, or improvement
in well-being and overall quality of life, longer-term therapy is indicated.

How much is therapy and do you take insurance?
See Fees for the cost of each session. Our fees are suggested amounts, but you are free to offer what
you can afford.  We do not accept insurance, but do issue receipts that you can submit for
reimbursement.  Please
contact us for more information.
